The Roxy Theatre, an iconic Art Deco landmark in Leeton, NSW, has been a centrepiece of the community since its opening in 1930.

Originally built as a cinema and later expanded to include a stage for live performances, this treasured venue combines modified Art Deco style with Art Nouveau and Spanish Mission design elements. As one of the few two-level cinemas in New South Wales, the Roxy holds a State Heritage Listing and has long served as a versatile space for concerts, theatre, film screenings and community events.

Undergoing a $11M redevelopment, the Roxy Theatre is set to reclaim its status as a vibrant cultural and community hub. The first phase of the redevelopment, focused on the Main Auditorium, was completed in December 2024, with additional Stage 2 works to follow in early 2025. The revitalised theatre will officially reopen in March 2025, offering a multifunctional facility designed not only for entertainment but also as an emergency evacuation centre during natural disasters. This project will further solidify the Roxy Theatre’s place as a high-profile tourist destination.

The scope of works for the refurbishment and extension of the building in Stages 1 and 2 includes a new dressing room, green room, amenities, box office, cinema, management office, loading dock, café/bar, technical theatre equipment, additional and replacement seating, service upgrades including air conditioning, upgrades to the stage and auditorium, accessibility improvements, roof repairs, and meeting heritage requirements.

DCWC has played a critical role in bringing this ambitious vision to life, first by working on the initial business case, and later providing expert Superintendent and Quantity Surveying services. Working on a State Heritage Listed building presented unique challenges, from complying with strict heritage requirements to preserving the iconic architectural features while modernising the structure for improved functionality and safety. Through meticulous cost management and attention to detail, DCWC has contributed to the successful delivery of this beloved facility, securing its future as a cornerstone of culture and community for the Leeton Shire and the surrounding region.
