The Department for Education South Australia allocated significant financial investment towards upgrading several primary and secondary schools across South Australia as part of its Education Capital Works Program.

One of these projects, the Grant High School redevelopment, was successfully completed in early 2022. This redevelopment transformed the school with modern learning spaces tailored to deliver contemporary teaching methods, aimed at improving learning outcomes for all students.DCWC was engaged by the Department for Education’s delivery partner, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, to provide comprehensive cost management services throughout the project—from concept stage cost planning to construction completion.The redevelopment included:

• Demolition of existing dilapidated buildings.

• Construction of a new Performing Arts/Music and GLA’s Building.

• Refurbishment of the existing Physics Laboratory.

• Refurbishment of the existing Art Room.

• Refurbishment of the existing Weights Room.

• Associated external works, including 30 new car parks, stormwater upgrades, and landscaping.

Located approximately 440km (4.5 hours) from Adelaide, the project presented unique challenges due to its regional setting. Both the Department for Education and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport anticipated higher costs for development outside the metropolitan area. Our Adelaide team was selected for their extensive experience in the region, as well as their ability to accurately manage costs and associated risks.

Leveraging robust cost models, benchmark data specific to the Mount Gambier region, and strong local market knowledge, the team successfully managed the project within the fixed funding allocation. Their connection to local contractors, sub-contractors, and suppliers was instrumental in the project's success.
