Darlington Public School redefines modern education spaces.

DCWC proudly delivered extensive Quantity Surveying services for the redevelopment of Darlington Public School, a project that has redefined modern educational spaces. Designed by the renowned fjmt studio, this remarkable transformation of the existing site gained global recognition, winning the prestigious title of World Building of the Year 2024 at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.

Situated in the vibrant neighbourhood of Chippendale, near the University of Sydney and the bustling communities of Darlington and Newtown, the project blends innovation with cultural sensitivity. The updated campus features striking linear brick structures that pay homage to the area's industrial history. These buildings accommodate adaptable learning spaces, a versatile hall, and state-of-the-art support facilities. A flowing, curved perforated metal façade creates dynamic outdoor areas for play, movement, and open-air learning.

The new design prioritises inclusivity, safety, and community connection, providing a contemporary environment tailored to the needs of students and staff. It also celebrates cultural diversity, integrating the rich heritage of the Aboriginal People through preserved artworks enhanced with QR codes for interactive storytelling and engagement.

The redevelopment seamlessly merges modern architecture with cultural and historical significance. A standout feature of the campus is the angular brick building with a distinctive "sawtooth" roof, surrounded by landscaped outdoor spaces that include a basketball court and a community garden. Sydney-based fjmt studio describes the redesign as a "radical transformation," offering "modern and contemporary learning spaces" while preserving the essence of the original campus.

The new school now accommodates over 500 students, from preschool to primary school, with facilities designed to adapt to evolving educational needs. Construction was completed in two phases to ensure minimal disruption to students. Celebrating Aboriginal culture, murals from the old campus were recreated on the new building’s cladding, while Indigenous art was thoughtfully incorporated into key spaces, such as the school hall, reception, and classrooms.

Darlington Public School stands as a testament to thoughtful design and cultural respect, serving as a vibrant hub for students and the community.
