If you have ever wondered what a quantity surveyor actually does on a project — beyond producing a cost plan — we recently sat down with members of our team to answer exactly that question. In the video below, they explain the QS role in straightforward terms, walk through how we work with clients and architects from the earliest stages, and share what makes DCWC's approach genuinely different. Understanding how cost management fits into a project is one of the most valuable things you can do before you begin.
What Does a Quantity Surveyor Actually Do?
A quantity surveyor's work spans the full life of a project. We prepare and manage cost plans, run the tendering and procurement process, administer contracts, and handle variations as the project evolves — right through to final accounts at completion. Our role is to give clients and their project teams a clear, accurate picture of where costs stand at every stage, so there are no surprises.
Involved from Day One
We work best when we are brought into a project early — ideally alongside the architect, before design decisions are locked in. At that point, we take time to understand what each client is genuinely trying to achieve: their cost targets, their programme, the quality they are after, and the design intent they want to protect. Running cost plans progressively through each design stage means clients can make informed decisions as the project develops, rather than discovering problems when it is costly to change course.
A Team Built for Every Project
Our model pairs senior quantity surveyors with graduate professionals on every project, which means clients benefit from both deep experience and fresh perspective — and graduates build their skills in a hands-on environment with strong mentoring. We have an excellent rate of RICS qualification among our team, which reflects the standards we hold ourselves to. Importantly, the same professionals who start a project with you will see it through to the end; continuity of personnel is something our clients consistently tell us they value.
Sectors We Serve
We bring quantity surveying and cost management expertise across a wide range of project types and scales, from complex infrastructure programmes to single-building commissions. Our experience spans:
Arts and Culture
Aviation
Civic, Sports and Recreation
Commercial and mixed-use development
Education
Heath
Infrastructure
Residential, and more
Cost management done well is quiet — projects stay on budget, decisions are made with confidence, and teams work together without friction. That is what we aim to deliver on every project, and it is what our clients come back to us for. The video above is a good starting point for understanding how we work and the kind of team you would be working with. We would be glad to talk through what that could look like on your next project.
