Fortitude Valley State Secondary College – Stage 1 was a construction project located in Fortitude Valley, Queensland. Donald Cant Watts Corke provided services for Project Management, Superintendency, Programme Management, and Cost Management. The project commenced in 2017 and was completed in May 2020, with a contract value of $82 million AUD.

The primary objective of the project was to establish an innovative vertical school, which would be developed in two stages. Stage 1, which has been recently finished, encompassed the construction of several key structures. These included a new General Teaching Building spanning six storeys, a Performing Arts Centre, and a refurbishment of an existing building to create a Music Teaching Building and a sports field area.

What set this project apart was its unique nature as the first 'Vertical School' project undertaken by the Department of Education. Throughout the project, the Department made a conscious effort to deviate from the standard materials and room data standards typically employed, instead opting for innovative uses of technology. The project underwent a design and tender stage, utilising a Design and Construct delivery approach. To meet the project budget, a significant Value Management process was undertaken during this stage.

Despite a tight schedule, the project achieved further gains in terms of its timeline through precise management of the contractor and the implementation of an incentive structure. This incentivised the contractor to complete the project within the agreed-upon contract date.
