Janine Jonathan, Senior Cost Manager at DCWC
As we continue to mark International Women in Construction Week and Friday's upcoming International Women's Day, today we're thrilled to highlight Janine Jonathan, Senior Cost Manager at DCWC with our Adelaide team.
Janine's journey to her current role is a reflection of her resilience and commitment to achieving her goals. Despite her parents being unable to afford her education, Janine worked to pay for her studies. With hard work and determination, she has been able to achieve many of her life goals, including building a successful career to pursue the opportunity to live and work away from her home country of South Africa.
Inspiration to pursue a career in construction was her father, a Welding Supervisor. Janine credits her mother as her mentor, from whom she learned valuable life lessons. As a woman in the industry, she believes her perspective positively impacts her work. She also firmly believes in the power of knowledge sharing, and had spent many years mentoring candidate Quantity Surveyors in South Africa before moving to Adelaide last year.
Janine has faced many gender-related challenges in her career, including no provision of separate female toilet facilities on construction sites. Experiences such as this provided Janine with the necessary skills to advocate for equality in the workplace and pave a better pathway for younger women in the industry.
Like many working parents, balancing work and personal life is a challenge. Whilst Janine works hard to prioritise her children, she understands that providing them with the best opportunities requires her to continue with her career goals. Her advice to others striving to maintain a work-life balance is to remember what's most important and manage your time effectively.
Her standout career highlight is gaining professional registration in Quantity Surveying in both South Africa and Australia with AIQS and ASAQS accreditation. Now, a proud member of NAWIC, she looks forward to continuing to celebrate and grow female participation in the construction industry.
Thank you, Janine, not only for your contribution to DCWC, but also for your efforts in reducing the gender gap in the construction industry!
