DCWC delivered comprehensive cost management for the Centre’s rebuild, ensuring the project was executed efficiently and effectively.
The new Visitor Centre at Flinders Chase National Park, situated at Karatta on the western coast of Kangaroo Island, serves as a replacement for the Rocky River Centre, which was destroyed in the catastrophic ‘Black Summer’ bushfires of 2019/20. This modern eco-friendly and fire-resistant centre has been thoughtfully designed to be a welcoming gateway to some of the island's most renowned attractions, including the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Centre features a café for visitors and souvenir shop.
DCWC provided comprehensive cost management services throughout the rebuild of the Centre, ensuring that every aspect of the project was executed with the efficiency and effectiveness. In an effort to minimise the risk of future bushfires affecting the new facility, it has been strategically constructed on a previously developed site that is closer to the park’s entrance. This placement not only enhances accessibility for visitors but also employs innovative building techniques, using frames crafted from fire-resistant Australian timber to ensure durability and safety.
The design of the Visitor Centre incorporates modern technologies that reflect a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. It includes solar panels for renewable energy generation, battery storage systems to manage energy supply, and electric vehicle charging stations to encourage eco-friendly transportation options. Furthermore, advanced energy-efficient heating and cooling systems have been integrated to optimise comfort while reducing environmental impact.
In addition to its visitor services, the centre is now home to the Flinders-Baudin Research Centre, representing a collaborative effort between the University of Adelaide and the Department for Environment and Water. This state-of-the-art facility features a well-equipped laboratory, administrative area, and accommodations for up to 10 academics. These researchers are dedicated to conducting vital ecological and conservation research at the facility, contributing valuable knowledge and insights to the preservation of the unique ecosystem of Kangaroo Island.
