The Ian Potter Southbank Centre, the new home of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), accommodates 8 levels and around 9,000sqm of learning and teaching programs, the formal learning and teaching spaces are complemented by a series of informal learning hubs and spaces. The variety of learning environments support and encourage multiple music learning and innovation pedagogies.

Studios 1 and 2, together with the Music Workshop will be the backbone of the new MCM. The building provides a high level of functionality for the specific acoustic, practice and teaching requirements of the MCM. From major rehearsal spaces to individual practice rooms, the acoustic character of each space was tuned in consultation with the client group and acoustic engineer.

MCM provides activated connections with the surrounding Southbank Campus and the wider Melbourne Arts Precinct. The building responds to the vision set out in the ‘Southbank Campus Urban Design Framework’ as well as addressing the objectives set out in the ‘Melbourne Arts Precinct Blueprint’ through making a significant and outstanding contribution to the community.
