James Cook University (JCU) - Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) Development

Written by DCWC Team | May 5, 2017 2:17:28 AM

We worked closely with JCU stakeholders to create new, and consolidate existing asset management information, to ascertain a holistic understanding of the asset portfolio.

This provided the foundation for developing a robust long-term strategy for the development of the Cairns and Townsville campuses, underpinned by empirical information and extensive stakeholder consultation.

Our team developed three preferred campus evolution strategies and modelled each one out over the next decade based on:

  • The priority of the assets in supporting JCU’s strategic objectives and service delivery requirements;
  • The age of the assets and their assessed lifecycle;
  • The current condition of the assets and the applied levels of maintenance service; and
  • The impacts of each strategy on the overall quality of the assets, enhancement to service delivery and financial implications.

Our modelling demonstrated that a strong campus rationalisation strategy provided the best outcomes for JCU by reducing the financial liabilities of ageing infrastructure, enabling JCU to redirect funding towards new, fit-for-purpose buildings.

Having adopted our recommendations JCU are progressing with campus rationalisation and reducing floor space 15%, freeing up funding to progress with a Campus Improvement Strategy.
