Bendigo Kangan Institute (BKI) has embraced a blended learning approach brought on by COVID-19 lockdowns. Designed by Architectus and constructed by Hutchinson Builders, the newly developed physical learning spaces prioritise Simulation Labs, hands-on experiences and collaborative learning.
DCWC provided Project Management and Superintendent Services for the construction of HACCOE, which represents Stage 1 of the Broadmeadows Master Plan, part of BKI’s Strategic Asset Master Plan across all their campuses. HACCOE is also a key component of the Victorian Government’s $383.8 million ‘Building Better TAFEs Fund’.
HACCOE's design aims to foster highly engaging and interactive environments where students can collaborate with teachers to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts. Simulation areas, formal classrooms, and informal study zones are thoughtfully distributed across three levels, connected by bright atriums that encourage movement and interaction.
The centre will offer a diverse range of courses, including nursing, pathology, disability support, residential care, and early childhood education. This design not only showcases various educational pathways but also ensures that simulation areas are prominently visible along key circulation routes. Furthermore, the building harmoniously integrates with the adjacent Broadmeadows Town Park, effectively linking the campus to the broader community.
Students will enjoy unparalleled autonomy in accessing online learning resources anytime and anywhere, including in the learning commons throughout the HACCOE facility. The new physical learning environment will also incorporate virtual elements, featuring spaces and technologies designed to simulate challenging or potentially hazardous scenarios, thereby enhancing student experiences through cutting-edge digital technology.
