50 Years On...

Donald Cant Watts Corke has proudly turned 50 this year, and to celebrate this milestone have been celebrating with their clients across Australia.

Group Managing Director, Mr Glenn Corke, reflects on his experiences with the company, and shares his insights on why he believes Donald Cant Watts Corke has been so successful in leaping above the competition and ensuring the company’s growth has been so consistent, despite the economic demands and changing trends within each of the industries the company operates. Glenn Corke Edited LN.jpg

“Fifty years is an incredible achievement and a milestone for any organisation, particularly for a privately owned Australian business – especially when you consider that a very high percentage of start-up businesses do not survive the first two years,” said Mr Corke at the gala ball, recently held in Melbourne.

“Today, our competition is either foreign owned businesses, major international engineering houses or listed companies.”
Mr Corke proudly stated: “This has been an incredible journey which commenced at a single desk in someone’s house in East Melbourne. We have now grown to become a national business that employs over 150 people, and has worked on some of the most important and prestigious buildings which have become major icons across Australia over the half century.”

Mr Corke said that the celebratory book, “Foundations for the Future” which was published this year to commemorate the company’s golden anniversary is a reminder of how far the company has come: “The book recognises Donald Cant’s legacy, the contribution made by John Watts as well as the impact our highly talented team has on ensuring our vision and aspirations for the future are upheld.”

“From the time that Don started this organisation, he had a ‘hands on’ work ethic and a philosophy to be a trusted advisor to his clients. This mantra remains within all of us to this day.”

Mr Corke continued by saying, “It’s hard being a leader on your own, so bringing in people with strong skills and expertise has been vital. It’s not always easy or comfortable as they challenge me; the key is being open enough to learn.”
This mirrors Mr Cant’s motto, printed on the inner cover of the commemorative publication: “Well, you must always remember that you’re never too great or grand to learn something”.

“While 50 years is a huge milestone and something for us to be proud of, we need to acknowledge that it is simply that, and not a finish line,” Mr Corke added on his reflection of his time at Donald Cant Watts Corke.

“Now, we must look to the future and ensure the next part of the journey is as successful as the first five decades.”

“Under our 2020 vision, we will continue to grow our shareholders, our services, the industries we specialise in and strengthen each of our offices around Australia.

“We will also continue to give back to the community as our success continues, such as through the RMIT Scholarship, monetary partnership with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, research opportunities at the College of Optometry, as well as Brisbane’s first children’s hospice, Hummingbird House.

“These are all critical aspects of our business, which define how we relate to our clients, how we like to do business, and the legacy Donald Cant Watts Corke wishes to continually uphold within the consulting services arena,” Mr Corke added.

“Many things have changed over the last 50 years, but we have never lost our drive towards being a trusted advisor, a real partner with our clients. This commitment is our foundation for the future.”
