Over the past few weeks, Quantity Surveyor Ruky Wang, participated in the Smart Seeds Innovation Program, Canberra. The program brings together multi-disciplinary, young professionals to collaborate and generate solutions for complex infrastructure challenges that face our cities.

Winners were announced on Thursday 29 June at the showcase event where teams pitched their ideas to a panel of industry professionals.

The panel included Judith Zielke Deputy Secretary - Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Catherine Townsend, ACT Government Architect and Director at Townsend & Associates Architects, Josh Polette, General Manager RPDE Program and Ann Jakle, Community Engagement Specialist at Telstra.

We are excited to announce that Ruky’s team, ‘Action2u’ received the People’s Choice Award!

‘Action2u’ chose to tackle the topic of: Public Transport on Demand - How do we utilise Canberra’s public transport system more effectively? Could an on-demand styled service work for Canberra?

“Our idea involves using a hub-and-spoke bus network, with major hubs such as Belconnen, Gungahlin, Civic, Woden and Tuggeranong connected by frequent, un-timetabled buses, with smaller shuttles also providing a door-to-door service from these hubs to surrounding suburbs,” said Ruky Wang.

“Mobile app technology could allow customers to plan their trip and request a shuttle to stop at their door, while data and cloud computing would enable shuttles to follow optimised routes to pick up passengers and deliver them to hubs,” added Ruky.

“The potential benefits of this initiative include increased public transport usage, improved commuter safety, more efficient use of existing assets and infrastructure, reduced congestion and vehicle emissions. This would result in improved quality of life for ACT residents, which is ultimately the aim of the Smart Seeds program.”

Well done to Ruky and her team, what a great result!
