Partnering with Australia’s leading education and property development institutions nationwide, Donald Cant Watts Corke is proudly providing services to a number of student accommodation projects.

Over the last 12 months, our student accommodation portfolio strengthened significantly as we were appointed new roles, continued works and reached practical completion for a range of complex and challenging projects.

Queensland

Our Project Management team in the Sunshine State was granted several roles for a range of exciting student accommodation projects in 2016, including Scape Living Australia in Vulture Street, Brisbane. This development incorporates 787 fully contained bedrooms across two 15-level towers, combined with a reception, common space kitchen, coffee shop, gymnasium, as well as dining and entertaining spaces. This project is due for completion in early 2018.

Impressed with our Vulture Street efforts, Scape Living Australia also appointed us to their $80 million, 726 bed, Toowong student accommodation project.

Additionally, our Queensland Quantity Surveying and Project Management teams were both appointed to provide services for the Australian Catholic University (ACU) student accommodation Site Analysis project, which led to our further appointment as Project Managers for the construction of the $20 million Banyo Campus accommodation facility.

Western Australia

Construction has begun on the University of Western Australia’s Forrest Hall accommodation for post-doctoral students and academics. The new $16 million development – for which we are providing Cost Management services - will be a stunning addition to the UWA campus and has been designed to promote a stimulating and creative living environment for scholars and rising research stars.

Victoria

This year, both our Victorian Project Management and Quantity Surveying teams were granted the opportunity of working on the new student accommodation Citiplan project at 16-32 Leicester Street, Carlton.

We are also in the process of completing works on the Scape Living Australia, 393 Swanston Street project in Melbourne’s CBD, which is due for completion in 2018, as well as the Australian Catholic University Camillus Student Village.

Donald Cant Watts Corke also provided Project Management and Superintendent services for the Stage 1 Monash University Student Accommodation Project – Logan Hall, Turner Hall and Holman and Campbell Halls, which was the recipient of numerous outstanding awards this year:

2016 Victorian Architecture Awards:
- Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing – Best Overend Award – Logan Hall
- Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing Award – Holman and Campbell Halls
- Urban Design Award – Clayton Urban Residential Community

2016 Dulux Colour Awards
- Multi Residential Interiors – Holman Hall
- Multi Residential Exterior – Logan Hall

Accommodating 1,000 students, the four new residential buildings comprise functional studio and staff apartments, floor lounges, common rooms, games rooms and associated support facilities. These self-contained apartments provide students the independence of living self-sufficiently in a safe and social environment. Our Project Management team managed four architectural teams in the preparation of the Design and Construct contract and tender documentation, within a tight timeframe. From consultancy appointment through to completion, the 1,000 apartments and associated works were delivered in 21 months.

Earlier this year the RMIT Bundoora West Student Accommodation project reached practical completion. This $50 million project comprises of 370 beds and common areas across six floors, and is the first purpose-built student accommodation for RMIT University. Our Victorian Project Management and Quantity Surveying teams were both engaged in services for this project.

Overall insights

“It is very clear, especially in recent times, that student accommodation facilities are becoming far more complex, catering to the lifestyle of the modern 21st century student,” explains Stephen McCoullough, Victorian QS Managing Director.

“The demand for student accommodation throughout Australia remains high and we are seeing an increase in the quality of the product on offer, as both the university and private providers continue to search for ways of attracting students into their facilities.

Our wide experience in this sector enables our clients to be at the leading edge of these projects.”

Our teams across the country are proud to be engaging in helping tertiary institutions provide the best facilities and accommodation for our next generation of leaders through Project Management and Quantity Surveying services.

Donald Cant Watts Corke has over 150 staff across Australia, who have the ability and enthusiasm to take on these challenges. We are passionate about being trusted advisors, in-depth knowledge experts, turning ideas into reality and cementing our presence as leading consultants in this sector.
