ARTC constructed the SSFL to separate passenger and freight rail services; reducing freight transit times, increasing freight capacity and encouraging a shift in freight from trucks to rail. This project overcame the existing bottleneck in the rail freight network in southern Sydney, where freight trains share existing rail lines with the Sydney metropolitan passenger services.

The SSFL project provided a 36 kilometre, bi-directional, non-electrified, dedicated freight line from Macarthur to Sefton Park Junction. It will connect with the Metropolitan Freight Network (MFN) at Sefton Park Junction and links with freight-only connections to Chullora, Enfield, Port Botany and Flemington.

The project was delivered by ARTC in two stages:

Stage 1 - between Sefton and Leightonfield (commissioned 24 June 2012)

Stage 2 - between Leightonfield and Macarthur (planned commissioning early 2013)

Our role included:

  •  Reviewing and providing advice on project documentation effecting infrastructure maintenance
  • Project risk assessments
  • Site inspections of works in construction phase
  • Asset handover management
  • Resolution of interface issues between the ARTC maintainers and the project
  • Participation in the ARTC Operational Readiness Committee
