Founded in 1953, Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia and a semi-autonomous department of the University of Melbourne.

In 2009, the MTC moved from its headquarters in Ferrars Street, Southbank, where it had been since the 1970s, to newly renovated offices and workshops in Sturt Street. The new complex houses a state-of-the-art 500-seat venue, a flexible studio for small-scale work, function rooms, bars and street-side cafes.
